Basal Metabolic Rate
Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is essentially how much calories your body uses on a daily basis, at rest. Eat more calories than your base, you gain weight. Eat less, you lose weight. Keep in mind, that this is assuming no additional exercise or activities which increase your BMR. If you are worried about "fast" or "slow" metabolism, just +/- 400 to the calculation. If you are worried about Thyroid complications, multiply the calculation by 0.90. This is an approximation, so it is not set in stone. Link to source with more in-depth information.
